LIPOR – Serviço Intermunicipalizado de Gestão de Resíduos do Grande Porto

LIPOR – Intermunicipal Service for Waste Management of Greater Porto – was founded in 1982 as an Association of Municipalities and manages, values, and treats urban waste produced by the eight municipalities that comprise it: Espinho, Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Valongo, and Vila do Conde. At the same time, it continues to share good practices, complemented by awareness campaigns within the population. Lipor treats about 500 thousand tons of urban waste produced by about 1 million inhabitants every year. It is based on modern concepts of waste management, which advocate the adoption of integrated systems and the minimization of waste deposition in landfills. LIPOR participates in work package 5, looking for solutions for the valorization of by-products from the treatment of bio-waste through their use as an organic medium for the growth of microalgae.
